Facebook is a phenomenon. Launched in 2004, Facebook today has over 900 million active users, more than half of them using mobile devices. Thousands sign up for Facebook daily; in such a scenario, there could be some privacy and security issues. Here are a few things you can do to make sure no one can access your Facebook account without your knowledge.
HTTPS://
Ever made payments online or paid close attention to the URL of your favorite site? That “s” in "https://" means that your computer is connected to the website through a site code or simply means that you're using a secure connection. Facebook allows you to set your profile viewing through this HTTPS mode permanently. You can sign up for Facebook HTTPS by going to Account Settings and then selecting "Account Security", third from the bottom. Then click under "Secure Browsing". In case you can’t find it there, try their help search to locate the settings.
Remote Logging Off
In-case you accidentally forgot to log off from Facebook on a public computer or at a friend’s home, don't panic! The dudes at Facebook have a special feature just for you. It enables you to see if you’re still logged onto other devices; you can immediately log out from those devices via one central control in your account. This feature is rolling out gradually. Once it’s live, you can try it under the “Account Security” section of your Account Settings page.
Login Notifications
This is another clever feature provided by Facebook which alerts you when your account is accessed by any new device. You can choose to be alerted via SMS or e-mail with information on the system, date, time and, in some cases, location.
To turn on Login Notifications:
Go to your Security Settings page (Account Security > Security)
Click on the Login Notifications section
Check the box next to the type of alerts you'd like to receive and save your changes
Login Approval
This is another login related feature which is a little more secure but slightly irritating as well. In this feature, every time you login to Facebook you will be asked to enter a security password apart from your normal password. This special security password is sent via SMS to your registered cellular device. Really high tech and secure but a little bugging with network delays; but, all in all, a very nice way to keep your account free from misuse.
You can enable 'Login Approvals' from the 'Account Security' section of the account settings page.
