Katy Perry has started her own record label. Launched as a subsidiary of Capitol Records, Metamorphosis Music's first artist is a pop singer named Ferras.
Announcing the label on Twitter, Perry described Ferras as "incredible talented & soulful". He is "an important artist" and "a man with a message", she wrote in a subsequent press release.
It's not quite clear yet what Ferras's message is. Born Ferras Alqaisi, the Los Angeles-based singer released his debut album, Aliens & Rainbows, in 2008. Despite his music being used on American Idol and a push from Capitol, it only reached No 97 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Metamorphosis released Ferras's subsequent self-titled EP on Tuesday. Its highlight is the lead single and duet with Perry titled Legends Never Die. Although Ferras is vaunted as a songwriter, penning songs for Adam Lambert and Ricky Martin, Legend Never Die was written with two other people, including Dark Horse co-writer Sarah Hudson.

"[Katy] was a natural partner," Ferras said in a statement. "[Her] instincts are really on point. She is very blunt and doesn’t sugar-coat things, which I appreciate. Also, she gave me the freedom to do what I wanted musically."

As a wing of Capitol, Metamorphosis is part of the much larger Universal Music Group, which also owns Def Jam and Republic records. Perry and Ferras met there in 2007 when they had both recently been signed.

Ferras will join Perry on her Prismatic world tour starting on 22 June. Perry recently completed the UK leg of the tour; she is due to perform in the United States and Australia throughout the rest of the year.
