Yenagoa — Kidnappers of 86-year-old Ogboro Orumo, the mother-in-law of the Speaker of Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Konbowei Friday Benson, have demanded N40million ransom to free their victim.
The armed bandits abducted her last Friday from her residence in Seibiri compound in Korokorosei, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
The hoodlums, who operated a speed boat, stormed Orumo's home at about 1am and dragged her into the creeks shooting sporadically.
Sources said they established contact with a member of the family on Wednesday to demand the N40m ransom.
They were said to have threatened that the amount should not be negotiated downwards otherwise they would abandon her in their hideout and allow her to rot away.
The state traditional rulers council has, however, condemned the abduction saying it was one kidnap too many in the state.
Chairman of the traditional rulers' council, Godwin Igodo, said in Yenagoa on Thursday that the menace of kidnapping was becoming increasingly worrisome.
Igodo, who also tasted the bitter pill of abduction, last year, having spent over 29 days in his captors' den, said kidnapping was alien to the Ijaw culture.
He urged the state government to adopt proactive security measures to tackle kidnapping and other vices in the state.
"I have been a victim. I spent 29 days in the den of kidnappers under the rain and the sun", he said in a statement on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Speaker has visited his In-laws at Korokorosei, calling for the establishment of a mobile police base in the community.
Benson, in a statement on Thursday issued by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Piriye Kiyaramo, said a mobile police base when set up would reduce kidnapping and acts of violence in Southern Ijaw.
He vowed that no dime would be paid to the kidnappers to release Orumo. He expressed sympathy to the famil
y and appealed for patience as the matter had been reported to the police for action.
